Pemberton Law is a longstanding legal institution known for delivering professional and effective legal services to both individuals and businesses. As one of Minnesota’s most respected firms outside of the twin cities, it combines the depth of big-city legal expertise with the personalized service of a small-town practice.
The firm currently operates from four offices in Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Detroit Lakes, and Wadena. All attorneys are certified by the Minnesota State Bar, with several also licensed in surrounding states, including North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Many have represented clients across a broad range of jurisdictions throughout the United States.
Pemberton’s attorneys specialize in focused practice areas to provide clients with expert-level guidance. They work collaboratively through practice groups and prioritize ethical, client-centered legal advocacy. The firm has a legacy of its lawyers being appointed to prestigious positions, including judgeships and even the Minnesota Supreme Court.
The firm’s roots trace back to 1883, when William L. Parsons and James A. Brown partnered in Fergus Falls. Their early success led to a lineage of partnerships that shaped the modern firm. Over the decades, the firm underwent multiple name changes as partners joined or were appointed to judicial roles. Notably, Roger L. Dell became Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, and several others were appointed judges in the 7th Judicial District.
Richard L. Pemberton joined the firm in 1960, becoming a namesake. The Pemberton legacy grew through continuous expansion and generational involvement, including three generations of the Rufer family. From the 1990s onward, the firm continued to expand by hiring new attorneys and merging with other local law offices.
