Kristi Hastings is a partner at the Fergus Falls office of Pemberton Law, and her practice areas include representing public entities (school, city, and county employers), handling complex employment litigation, human resources support, negotiating collective bargaining agreements on behalf of public employers, defending public entities in litigation matters, as well as handling the myriad of issues that face public employers on a daily basis.

Kristi is a Board-Certified Labor and Employment Law Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association. Less than two percent of Minnesota attorneys have received this certification. Kristi earned her specialization in March 2012 and has extensive experience and training in employment law. She has been named a Super Lawyer every year from 2014 to 2024. Kristi also earned her certification as a Civil Rights Investigator through ATIXA in 2021.

Kristi grew up on her family's dairy farm near Ashley, North Dakota. She started her education at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota and completed her undergraduate education at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks in 1998, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. Kristi received her Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2001. Kristi began working for Pemberton Law as a legal clerk during law school before becoming an associate and later a partner.

Professionally, Kristi has served as president and member of the Board of Directors of the Fergus Falls 544 Education Foundation and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Council of School Attorneys and Greater Fergus Falls. She also served as president of the Otter Tail County Bar Association and the Seventh District Bar Association. In addition to serving upon these professional boards, Kristi is active in the community, serving on several local boards.

Kristi was a 2022 fellow with the Minnesota Education Policy Fellowship studying public policy surrounding education in Minnesota.

Kristi, her husband Jason, their daughter Ava, and their son Dane have made Fergus Falls their home. In her spare time, Kristi enjoys creative endeavors as well as any activities that will keep her and the family outdoors.

  • WHAT KRISTI'S CLIENTS SAY

“In 2012, there was an alleged bullying situation involving multiple students in our school district. After gathering information about the situation, Kristi recommended a course of action for our district, assisted with that course of action, and developed a plan for the future. This difficult situation would not have turned out as well had we not used Kristi.”

  • WHAT KRISTI'S CLIENTS SAY

“We have received very competent professional service from Kristi and other Pemberton associates. The responses have always been timely and thorough. We have moved all of our legal work to Pemberton.”

  • WHAT KRISTI'S CLIENTS SAY

“The degree of knowledge related to school law and operations is a main advantage. Also, the ability to work in a firm but positive manner has been the norm with Kristi. Her ability to earn the trust of all parties has been appreciated. In the area of contract negotiations, with Kristi’s help, we completed tough union contract negotiations in a couple evenings, rather than the two years the previous contract took to complete.”
